Frequently Asked Questions
Do you pay me for participating in experiments? How much?
Yes, it's paid work.
PARTICIPATION in BLESS research is REMUNERATED. The amount depends on your decisions and those of the other research participants. During a study, each participant must follow the rules defined by the researchers in the instructions.
For each study, more people will be called than will actually be used. However, an ATTENDANCE TOKEN will be provided to those who have been invited, have registered and arrived on time, but were unable to participate in the study due to laboratory capacity constraints or other technical reasons.
I've seen that there are Sessions with free places in the calendar. Why I cannot register for these sessions?
For the most experiments we invite only a random subset out of all participants. We do that to ensure that not always only participants with instant access to their email participate at the experiments.
On the other side, sometimes we invite only participants with certain characteristics, for instance people who have not participated in some former experiments.
Thus it is possible that you see experiment sessions in the calendar but are not invited for them. However, if there are not enough participants registering for these sessions, we will send out invitations to more participants
May I know the content of the research you have invited me to participate in?
Unfortunately, this is not possible. The protocol stipulates that participants must be informed during the research, but not before.
I would be willing to participate, but it's fully booked. Is there a waiting list?
Generally, more people are invited than are needed, precisely to have a reserve list. If the session appears to be ‘full’, it means that the reserve list has also been filled.
Do I have to show up when I am invited to an experiment?
When you are invited for an experiment you can only participate in case you explicitly confirmed your participation. Confirmation is done by clicking on a link provided in the invitation e-mail and picking one out of several dates of the experiment. After registering for a date you get an e-mail confirming your registration.
However, when you have registered for a certain date, you are expected to come. Regarding the topic "Cancel registration" please read the corresponding FAQ.
What is the meaning of the three question marks "???" after an experiment under "Experiments you participated"?
After counducting an experiment we need some time to update the participant database. As long as the experimenter has not filled in the participation data, there will be the three question marks as the "show-up" status for an experiment. When the data is there, the status will change to either "yes" or "no".
Should I put in fake information when creating a subject account?
No. Please, provide accurate information so as not to compromise the results of our research. Some information is mandatory for registration, while other information is optional.
However, your information is crucial for our research so the more information you provide, the greater the likelihood that you will be invited to participate. It is essential that you always provide accurate information and never false information.
How can I cancel my registration for an experiment?
You have to check if you are available for an experiment BEFORE you register for it. However, if you become ill or are not able to attend due to some unforeseeable event, you can cancel your registration on-line until 24 hours before the beginning of this activity. REMEMBER: after three unjustified absences you will lose the right of participating in the laboratory's activities.
Who can apply for a subject account?
Anyone who is interested in participating in experiments can apply for a subject account. However, to participate in laboratory experiments, you should be able to come to our laboratories situated in Bologna, via Ranzani 14/b, Italy.
I have registered for an Experiment, but cannot register for all the other experiments, because they disappeared!
Nearly all experiments consist of several sessions. You can only register for one session for a certain experiment. If you are registered, the other sessions will disappear from the list.
However: For every single experiment you will get an extra invitation e-mail, if you are invited.
